Braces and Invisalign® Clear Aligners
Looking into straightening your teeth? There are different options for orthodontic treatment. The most traditional type of treatment is with metal braces. Braces consist of metal brackets on each tooth and a metal wire that connects them and causes teeth to shift. Newer technology has allowed for clear aligners to be designed with companies like Invisalign®. This form of treatment consists of a series of aligners that you move through over time.
When comparing the two treatment types, traditional metal braces are very visible due to the metal being placed on the front of your teeth. They are also permanent and cannot be removed. During treatment, you do have some food and drink restrictions. For example, you are highly encouraged to stay away from hard, sticky foods like taffy, popcorn, and biting into apples. This is because these foods can cause brackets to break. A broken bracket can then delay your treatment time.
On the other hand, Invisalign® Clear Aligners are made out of a clear plastic material and are therefore much less visible than braces. In some cases, tooth colored attachments need to be glued to your teeth to help shift them. However, these are not very noticeable. The aligners are not permanent, but need to be worn at all times except when eating or drinking something other than water. Aligners need to be removed when eating, so there is no food or drink restrictions with this form of treatment.
