Celebrate Teachers Every Day!

Teachers play a vital role in making a difference in a child’s life; they help them develop and teach them right from wrong. Many teachers go far beyond their role of “Teacher” – they often serve as parental figures, therapist, and friends.

We would like to shine the spotlight on one of our patients who is a first-year teacher. She just recently graduated from Columbus State University and is now teaching at Brewer Elementary School. Brewer is a Title I school located in Columbus with a 100% poverty rate. Ms. Adams is the perfect example of a teacher going far beyond what is expected of her. With the help of donors, she has funded projects such as Healthy Snacks to Support Healthy Minds, Hooked on Books and Yummy in our Tummies. From everyone at Jay Harris Orthodontics, THANK YOU for your service to our youth!

We asked Ms. Adams a few questions about being a teacher; read her responses below!

————————————————————————————————————————————————–

Q: What made you decided you wanted to become a teacher?

A: Growing up, I had so many teachers who impacted my life in so many different ways. The main reason I wanted to become a teacher was so that hopefully one day I could make that same impact on my student’s lives.

Q: What are you most excited/nervous about for this school year?

A: This is my very first full year teaching! I was most excited about getting to meet my students, and I am most nervous about getting the full experience of the job, the highs, and the lows.

Q: What is one thing you hope to achieve during your career?

A: One thing I hope to achieve during my career is becoming Teacher of the Year!

Q: How do you overcome the obstacles of teaching at a Title I school?

A:  I strive every day to make sure my students know how loved and cared about they are. I am constantly trying to find new ways to ensure my student’s success in the classroom. In fact, I use donation websites such as Donors Choose to help me provide for my students!

Q: Tell us a little more about some of the projects you have completed through DonorsChoose.org?

A: Donors Choose is an amazing website for teachers. I have received several projects funded in the past year from kind hearted people willing to help make a difference in a child’s life.  Through this organization, I have been able to purchase 8 Amazon fire tablets of my class. My students use these to do research on as well as “Smarty Ants” which is a website that helps them with their phonics and reading skills. To ensure that my students never go hungry, I have purchased food for them to eat as snacks in the afternoon as well as food to go home with them on the weekends. Personally, that has been my favorite project so far.
